I am making a show based on The Little Mermaid story. It’s my first time devising a piece, so it’s a journey in more ways than one. I am working with some amazing women: Edith Tankus and Caroline Horton performing and Kirsty Harris designing. We did three days R&D in June. At the end Shelley Hastings and Claire Beresford came in to see what we had been up to and chat to us about our ideas. In the R&D we focused on the key moments and relationships in the story, and in particular about what makes us human.
“My little beast, my eyes, my favourite stolen egg. Listen. To live is to be marked. To live is to change, to acquire the words of a story, and that is the only celebration we mortals really know. In perfect stillness, frankly, I’ve only found sorrow.”
There’s lots more thoughts on the first three days R&D here: www.theweekintheatre.com

Hello Allegra,
Do you have any more photos from the piece?
Kx
Hi Katy! We didn’t take any during the first 3 day R&D in June, but we are getting back together w/c 29th October for a second go… so we will have more pictures in about a month. But if you’re free you could come along at the end of that week and chat to us about it! Allegra x
Not much to contribute, other than to say I’ve had “to acquire the words of a story, that is the only celebration we mortals really know” going around and around in my head since I first read it.
It’s a beautiful notion.
Hi Marc… beautiful eh? Sadly can’t lay claim to them myself. I should have credited Barbara Kingsolver & The Poisonwood Bible. I read it 2 years ago and have basically been carrying that quote around in my head ever since!
what are the next steps for this itch? i am keeping an eye on this idea… as i really rate you guys as collaborators and i love the story.
Hi Sophie – next steps are a few more days (29th Oct – 3rd Nov.), fingers crossed at BAC, and then all going well a GfA to develop it properly in the spring… whole process slightly slow to start because of babies / weddings / other jobs! But I’ll keep you posted on the work pre-christmas so you can drop in. A x
